This workshop will give participants a taste of the Sanskrit language, its history and the systematic structure of the language. We will begin with the Sanskrit alphabet system and go through the pronunciation of the vowels and consonants. We will look at forming simple words and explore simple conversational Sanskrit. This is an introductory workshop and will provide an insight into the 6-week Sanskrit program. 

The workshop will include the pronunciation of some yoga postures (āsanas) and reciting a selection of chants. It will give participants the opportunity to share their interest in the language and the aspects of the language they would like to further explore in the more in depth Sanskrit program. 

Participants can expect the following: 

  • The history of the Sanskrit language

  • The whole Sanskrit alphabet system and reading the alphabets

  • Recognising simple words

  • Pronouncing the names of the more common āsanas

  • Chanting 


Your Guide

Meet Shyamala

Shyamala is a longtime practitioner of Yoga, and a scholar of Sanskrit and Yoga traditions. She is currently a Research Candidate for Asian and Pacific Languages with the Australian National University where she will further her Sanskrit Studies in Vedic texts and literature. She holds a BSC in Mathematics and Education and is a qualified yoga teacher. She has worked in the yoga industry and taught yoga to adults and children. As a scholar and practitioner, Shyamala hopes to provide yoga teachers and practitioners with a practical introduction to Sanskrit, the language of Yoga.
